Outwitted

For Poem-In-My-Pocket Day.

Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!

Edwin Markham
American Poet

  1. I remember having to memorize and recite this one, too! Can't think if it was 7th grade English or 9th grade speech class, though.

  2. I've used the one you quoted so many times with my children through the years. I enjoyed being reminded.

  3. Dana, I'm wading through Best Poems of the English Language (and got stuck on Milton) - but I think I'm going to move on to Dryden:-)Sometiems the book feels to be too much to fit in my poetry pocket:-)
