Movies

Choosing movies to watch is a task I usually leave up to DH. He does it well. I enjoy watching what he chooses. When he's not around, I don't usually watch movies. Too much else to do.

But in this case, two of my blogging buddies had recommended this film and I had some free time over the weekend. It was delightfully well-spent viewing this charming film. The story is a testimony to many things - the obvious being the power of love. However, the most remarkable to me was the power of non-verbal communication.

Have you seen Sweet Land?

Here's a link to a Minnesota Monthly article.

  1. I have wanted to blog about this movie for a while. I think it was almost like a Wendell Berry story, sparse but beautiful.

  2. Well, Cindy, I am still interested in reading your review of this movie.

As you see, I am short and terse, unable to wax poetically about this film that made cry and touched my heart.

This entry is mainly a start for creating a list of my favorite movies.

  3. Yes! We rented it and liked it so much that we bought it. And I sent a copy to Donna for her birthday. I don't ususally do that because it's difficult for me to recommend movies. But we really liked Sweet Land.

  4. I think you're on to something: the power of non-verbal communication.

This is good example of a movie "showing rather than telling". I liked the sparse dialog, the indirectness of much that was portrayed.

  5. I thought it was nice of Donna to allow us to celebrate her birthday with her...so publicly.

    I do love a good party :)

And I rely on my blogging buddies for good movies and books.

  6. Oh good, you liked it too.

It is slow, that's for sure. But the visuals and the music carried me along for this simple quiet love story.

And well...the quote at the beginning of the movie ties it all together so perfectly.

I watched it again on Saturday morning, when Katie was still sleeping and hubby was off at work.

Wasn't the comment about the coffee being too dark interesting!!

  7. Hi Donna!!

I would have missed that opening comment, if you hadnt highlighted it. Guess I dont pay close enough attention.

Also, I never watch the extra stuff on DVDs, but I plan to with this one.

And yeah, that was kind of funny about the coffee being too dark. I think the preacher thought she was too extravagant, using that many beans :)

But it was the dancing that I thought was sooooo romantic.

  8. Yes! Dancing on that little porch, in the light, in beautiful, stark, Minnesota.

    Ya.

I also liked how sweet it was when they projected the pictures and how that was considered to be such a treat.

    Simple pleasures.
