Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child

Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
A long ways from home,
A long ways from home,
True believer,
A long ways from home,
A long ways from home.

Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone,
Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone,
Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone,
Way up in the heavenly land,
Way up in the heavenly land,
True believer,
Way up in the heavenly land,
Way up in the heavenly land.

Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
A long ways from home,
A long ways from home,
True believer,
A long ways from home,
A long ways from home.

Negro Spiritual

While not unfamiliar with Spirituals, I had not heard this particular one until my children began singing in the chorus at their high school. I have always liked it and am posting the words today in honor of National Poetry Month.

The $12 CD can be ordered from

  1. Oh, oh! I sang that spiritual many years ago in 8th grade choir! You're the only person I've ever known to mention it since--we're talking 38 years ago here.

  2. Thanks for stopping by. I sang in middle school choir and loved it. Didnt make time in high school and college.

Every now and then I entertain the idea of joining the local community choir. Or at church.

Just not quite the right time....yet.

Singing is such a relaxing thing for me...like walking. It's work, but I feel so good after practicing :)
